Switching to an electric vehicle is one thing. Getting a chargepoint installed at home — and doing it in a way that is safe, legal, and compliant — is another. The good news is that financial support is available. The government has run grant schemes to reduce the upfront cost of EV charger installation, and for many homeowners, renters, and landlords, a significant portion of the cost can be covered.
This article explains the current grant landscape in plain terms: who qualifies, how much you can receive, what the money covers, and exactly what happens from your first enquiry to the grant being paid. What Is the OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant?
OZEV stands for the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, the government body responsible for policies and funding related to zero-emission transport. One of its flagship schemes is the EV Chargepoint Grant, which replaced earlier incarnations of the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS).
The grant provides eligible applicants with up to £350 (or 75% of the total installed cost, whichever is lower) towards the cost of purchasing and installing a home EV chargepoint.
This is not a cashback scheme paid to you after the fact. The grant is claimed directly by the approved installer — in this case, Power Team Electrics — and deducted from your installation invoice at the point of purchase. You never see the money move; you simply pay the reduced amount.
Who Is Eligible for the EV Chargepoint Grant?
Homeowners
If you own a home with dedicated off-street parking (a driveway, garage, or private parking space), and you own or have ordered an eligible electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle, you may qualify.
Key requirements:
- The property must be in the UK
- The chargepoint must be installed at the same address as the vehicle's registered keeper
- The charger must be from an approved product list
- Installation must be carried out by an OZEV-approved installer

Renters and Flat/Apartment Owners
This is where many people assume they are excluded — but that is no longer the case. The government extended eligibility to:
- People who rent their home (with landlord permission to install)
- Flat and apartment owners (including leasehold properties)
Renters must obtain written consent from their landlord before installation.
What If I Do Not Own a Vehicle Yet?
You must have ordered or already own an eligible electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle to qualify. If you have a confirmed order — even if delivery is still pending — you can proceed with the installation and grant application in the meantime, provided you can evidence the order.
How Much Is the Grant Worth?
The grant covers up to £350 or 75% of the installed cost, whichever figure is lower.

The grant covers the cost of the chargepoint unit itself and the labour for installation. It does not cover any remedial electrical work that may be required beforehand — for example, if your consumer unit needs upgrading, that work is quoted and invoiced separately.
What Does the Grant Cover — and What Does It Not Cover?
Covered by the grant:
- The cost of an approved EV chargepoint unit
- All standard installation labour
- Basic cable management and containment
- Commissioning and testing of the chargepoint
Not covered by the grant:
- Consumer unit upgrades or fuse board replacements (quoted separately)
- Rewiring or new circuits beyond the scope of a standard installation
- Remedial electrical work identified during a pre-installation survey
- Additional earthing arrangements if required
- Any civil works such as groundworks or new build cabling routes
The Landlord EV Charging Grant
There is a separate grant scheme for landlords who want to install EV chargepoints across their rental portfolio.
The Landlord EV Charging Grant operates on the same principle as the residential grant but is specifically designed for:
- Private landlords with residential rental properties
- Social housing providers
Under the landlord scheme, eligible landlords can claim up to £350 per chargepoint socket installed, across up to 200 sockets per applicant.
Why this matters for landlords: EV charging is increasingly expected by tenants, particularly younger renters who are transitioning to electric vehicles. Properties with dedicated EV charging infrastructure command higher rents and are easier to let.
The Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020 already require landlords to carry out an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) every five years. If we are visiting a property for an EV charger installation, we will always advise on the current status of your EICR compliance at the same time.
The LEVI Fund — What Is It?
LEVI stands for the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure fund. It is a government initiative designed to address EV charging provision at a community level — local streets, residential estates, and areas where residents do not have access to private driveways.
The LEVI fund is not a grant scheme available directly to individual homeowners. It operates through local councils and charge point operators (CPOs) who bid for funding to install public EV charging infrastructure in their area.
The Workplace Charging Scheme
For businesses and employers, a separate Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) provides support for installing EV chargepoints at commercial premises. The WCS offers a contribution of up to £350 per socket, across a maximum of 40 sockets per applicant.

- No eligible vehicle on record — obtain written confirmation of your vehicle order before proceeding.
- No dedicated off-street parking — confirmed during site survey.
- Installer not OZEV-approved — our engineers are OZEV-registered.
- Chargepoint not on the approved product list — we only supply and install units from the approved list.
- Incorrect or incomplete documentation — we manage all paperwork and cross-check every detail before submitting.
- Landlord consent missing (for renters) — we will remind you of this requirement early in the process.
Step-by-Step: From Enquiry to Grant Payment
- Initial enquiry: We ask about property type, parking situation, vehicle details, and whether you own or rent. This establishes your eligibility at the outset.
- Site survey: We visit to assess the consumer unit, cable route, earthing arrangement, and whether any additional electrical work is needed.
- Grant pre-approval: Our OZEV-registered engineers submit the grant application on your behalf before the installation takes place.
- Installation: We carry out the installation to the requirements of BS 7671 (18th Edition), Part P, and any conditions set by the grant scheme.
- Grant redemption: We submit the completed grant claim to OZEV. The grant is paid directly to Power Team Electrics and deducted from your invoice.
- Handover: We walk you through how to use your new chargepoint. You receive all relevant documentation.
